KAUNAS UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, LITHUANIA

Kaunas University of Technology had its beginning on 16 February 1922, when the University of Lithuania and its technical faculties were established.

The development of Lithuanian scientific ideas continued in the first Lithuanian independent technical school of higher education (in 1950–1990 titled Kaunas Polytechnic Institute (KPI)). It was famous for the ultrasound and vibrotechnics laboratories, and scientific research of textiles.

In 1990 KTU regained its status of the university and took a path of rapid reforms of studies and research. The University continues to pursue sustainable partnership of science, business and industry, develops and implements new ideas, innovations and inventions.

Since 1992 more than 144 thousand graduates graduated from the university.

The University’s strategy is based on KTU traditions and strengths – links with industry, wide range of studies and scientific research related to technologies, aligned with the needs of the State and international development trends. The objective of the University’s strategy is to become a leading university, competitive in the international space.

The Strategy is focused towards the strengthening of KTU’s responsibility to the society and the country, towards consolidating its activities for the improvement of the people’s life quality and acceleration of the statehood development. The main activities in this area are related to the transfer of knowledge and technologies created at the University so as they contributed to the country’s vitality and its sustainable knowledge-based economic, social and cultural development.

Some Facts about the university is as follows:

  • The University has 9 faculties8 institutes, 9 research centres, 23 student organisations, 12 dormitories, 7 art societies. It has a Sports Centre, which offers 20 sports classes, and a publishing house “Technologija”.
  • KTU is the founder of two integrated centres of research, studies and business – “Santaka” and “Nemunas” valleys. KTU National Innovations and Entrepreneurship Centre is responsible for protection and commercialisation of the University’s scientific production.
  • There are 9040 students studying at the university; 6670 of them are students of the first cycle (bachelor’s) and integrated studies, 2010 –master’s students, 320 doctoral students, and 40 students of professional studies. 590 international students study at KTU.
  • Student mobility: 410 outgoing students of partial studies and internships, and 320 incoming students of partial studies and internships.
  • There are 122 study programmes  in total; 48 of them – for the bachelor’s and integrated, 54 – for master’s, 19 – for doctoral studies. KTU offers 56 bachelor’s and master’s study programmes in English; all PhD studies are conducted in English.
  • 2195 employees taking 1971.36 FTE positions work at the University. 947 of them are lecturers taking 713.58 FTE positions, 183 researchers taking 118.86 FTE positions.
